Are you wasting time as efficiently as you could be? You’ve got plenty of choices
when it comes to instant messaging, whether you want HD video, a Web-based client, or one that aggregates all the competing services.
The trend in this year’s crop of instant messenger applications is clear: integrating social network updates. The latest releases of the major software companies’ IM clients—AIM 7.3, Windows Live Messenger Wave 4, and Yahoo Messenger 10 along with independents Digsby and Trillian Astra, now include mechanisms for getting your Facebook, Twitter, and other social updates in their windows without requiring you to visit said social networks’ site.

Over the last seven years, a rich universe of plug-ins has emerged, giving the already user-friendly publishing platform the extra flexibility to tweak SEO, the ability to display popular posts, and much more.
There are over 10,300 plug-ins available at the current count, which can make it a chore to discover plug-ins that would be beneficial to your site. Apple says that the way you hold the iPhone 4 affects the reception.
(Credit: Apple)
After just a few days in customers’ hands, the iPhone 4 has been demonstrated to show signal loss when gripped in a certain way. Apple is writing it off as easily fixable by altering the way it’s held. But is it a problem with the way customers are holding it or a flaw in Apple’s design? (more…)

The Web address Office.Live.com finally lives up to its name, because that’s the address where Microsoft’s long-awaited Office Web Apps have finally gone live. Five years after Writely.com, the first online word processor, hit the Web—and four years after Google absorbed Writely into Google Docs (Free, )—Microsoft has released its first cloud-based application suite, comprised of Web-based versions of components of Microsoft Office 2010 ($499 direct, ): Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and OneNote. Microsoft bills Office Web Apps as a “companion” to desktop-based Office, not a replacement for it, and I’d say that’s about right. Chances are most users will be both impressed and disappointed by various Office Web Apps, which seems fair enough for a first release—Google Docs has taken years to get to where it is today, after all.

Here’s what you need to consider before you take the plunge into the third dimension with a new 3D HDTV.
If finding the right HDTV wasn’t hard enough, now you need to decide if you want to make the leap to 3D. Walk into your local electronics store today and you’ll see 3D TVs from Panasonic and Samsung. Last week, Sony announced that you could preorder one of its Bravia 3D LED TVs, and LG, Mitsubishi, Sharp, Vizio, and others will start selling sets the coming months. If you check out an in-store demo, you’ll likely be impressed by 3D. We recently spent some quality time with Panasonic’s VT25 3D plasma watching Ice Age 3: Dawn of the Dinosaurs and it was a blast. After all, 3D adds depth and, when it’s done right, can make you feel like you’re inside the picture. While 3D isn’t new, bringing it to your living room on an HDTV is. As with any nascent technology, the big question is: Should you dive in now? Or wait until more 3D sets are available, prices come down, standards shake out, and content becomes more plentiful? Here’s what you need to consider before buying a 3D TV. (more…)

SAN FRANCISCO–Google co-founder Sergey Brin didn’t mince words in addressing one of the worst privacy-related gaffes his company has ever committed.
(Credit: Tom Krazit/CNET)
“In short, let me just say it: we screwed up,” Brin said in response to a question on Wednesday here at the Google I/O conference about the company’s disclosure last week that it had been collecting personal Internet usage data through its Google Street View program. “I’m not going to make any excuses about it.”
Google is facing a litany of complaints and possible government actions against its Street View program, following Friday’s announcement. The data collection was inadvertent, and the actual data itself was very spotty, Google said, but privacy advocates looking for a reason to slam Google got a fastball down the middle of the plate with the revelation.
Brin addressed criticism that Google’s famously laid-back culture isn’t designed to prevent problems such as the current one. “First, we do have a lot of internal controls in place, but obviously, they didn’t prevent this error from occurring. We are putting more internal controls in place,” Brin said.
“Trust is very important to us, Brin said. “We’re going to do everything we can to preserve that trust.”

When people like this do things like this they register their occupation, on registering their new gizmo, as “other.”
What could be more accurate. Each time someone takes a new Apple product and, you know, smashes it, destroys it, or mutilates it, one cannot help but admire the ingenuity that has gone in to such a pursuit. Ingenuity that could have otherwise been put to use in, oh, perhaps an episode of “Mythbusters.”
Still, this is modern art. If anything is.
You see, the creators of this video, in which they microwave the new iPad 3G, don’t merely toss it in the microwave as if this were the recalcitrant chef at your local Armenian bistro. No, they boot it up. They find a widescreen version of an iPhone 3GS being microwaved and ensure it is fully displayed on the iPad’s glorious screen. Only then do they place it carefully into the microwave.
