Though these days all the talk is about how the future is cloud-based computing—Google Chrome OS will only run Web apps—there is still a real need to run installed applications on Windows systems. In particular, I’m talking about utilities, those helper apps that do just one thing and do it well, whether it be playing or editing a media file or tweaking or peeking at a system function. We’ve rounded up our 15 newest reviews of our favorite utilities. Check them out—many will cost you no more than the time you’ll spend downloading it.
The first group of our small software gems include functions that you might pay bigger bucks for—I’m talking about watching video with the supremely versatile VLC media player, and editing sound with the open source Audacity, which offers multitrack sound recording and editing with a host of plug-in effects available. If 3D monitors aren’t doing it for you, here are a couple of larger display options — our lucky pals over at Engadget Chinese witnessed the birth of Optoma‘s first two 3D projectors in Taiwan yesterday. Pictured on the left is the HW536 cinema DLP projector (NT$36,900 or about US$1,150), which has HDMI input and projects a 1,280 x 800 image at 2,800 lumens with a 3,000:1 contrast ratio. Next up is the EX762 business DLP projector (NT$79,900 or US$2,490) that also sports HDMI input and a network jack, while delivering a 1,024 x 768 resolution at 4,000 lumens and a 3,000:1 contrast ratio. Just to add a tad more burden to your overdraft, each pair of ZD101 shutter glasses — not bundled with either projectors — will cost you a further NT$4,000 (US$125), in return offering a wireless range of up to eight meters courtesy of Texas Instruments’ non-directional DLP Link technology (so no need to position any external emitters). A couple of close-up photos after the break. (more…)

Sure, we’d love to be hanging out with this device in person, but we suppose this is second best. ASUS UK has some shots of the upcoming DR-950 e-reader, sporting 9-inches of grayscale SiPix e-paper. It admittedly looks pretty great under these idealized lighting conditions, and the homescreen interface looks simple and oh-so-touchable. Hopefully we get to put the device through its text-to-speech, 3G and ePub paces soon enough.

Finally, if you got around $100 in gift certificates you don’t know how to use, you might buy Windows 7 for yourself, because it’s an improvement over the Vista and XP—check out our Windows 7 versus XP and Windows 7 versus Vista performance tests. But owning Windows 7 isn’t the end of the story—the more you know about this operating system, the better, more convenient, and safer your experience using it will be. Read this overview of our Windows 7 coverage to make the most of your new PC OS.
Anyone who’s used a Windows PC over the last few years shouldn’t have much trouble adjusting to this operating system’s new interface. But there are a few pointers that can ease the transition. Man, it seems like years ago that a small company in Israel introduced us to a light projected keyboard interface. If you remember it, it displayed a red keyboard template and the projector was able to determine what key the user was pressing and translate it to text on a screen. This enabled the user to completely get rid of a physical QWERTY keyboard and provide extra space on the desk (which I could use considering I’m using two keyboards at the moment). But Light Blue Optics is taking it to a whole new level with Light Touch, a complete keyboard and display interface which brings computing to just about any surface. Read more ->
