USTDA Promotes U.S. Clean Energy, Information Technology Solutions in China
On September 8, the U.S. Trade and Development Agency (USTDA) awarded two grants that continue the agency’s support for clean energy and information technology projects in China.
The first grant builds on previous USTDA success in promoting the use of clean energy technologies in China’s coal mine methane (CMM) sector. A separate grant seeks to advance food security by fostering the development of a rural land registration program in Anhui Province.
China has announced plans to increase coal mine methane use to 10% of the country’s total natural gas consumption, more than double the amount in 2006. The USTDA grant awarded to the China United Coalbed Methane Corporation (CUCBM) will support this objective by introducing new low-density CMM technologies to China that will strengthen the country’s ability to meet its electric power demands while reducing methane emissions. In particular, the USTDA-funded study will develop a strategic framework for the implementation of the technologies in four provinces known for their rich coal resources: Xinjiang, Shanxi, Guizhou, and Yunan.
